France’s Alpes-Maritimes Imposes Drought Alerts on 45 Communes

(MENAFN) France’s Alpes-Maritimes department in the southeast declared drought alerts Tuesday affecting all 45 of its communes.

Following a thorough evaluation by the Water Resources Committee, Laurent Hottiaux, the Prefect of Alpes-Maritimes, made the decision to impose drought alert status on 40 communes spanning four watersheds. Additionally, five communes within one watershed were placed under a more severe drought alert, according to an official statement.

The department also activated a vigilance phase for several other watersheds amid growing concerns over water scarcity.

At the alert level, Alpes-Maritimes has mandated several stringent water conservation measures. These include prohibiting daytime watering of lawns and gardens, shutting down beach shower facilities, banning water-based recreational games, and imposing restrictions on water consumption for industrial, agricultural, and leisure activities.

The prefect’s decisive actions aim to curb water usage amid escalating drought conditions in the region.
